Why Don’t You Just Stop Smoking?

I think this image sums it up for smokers:

If you’re not familiar with this image it comes from a movie (based on a very popular book) called “The Lord of the Rings”. The concept of the movie is that someone must destroy a ring, however to do this they must go to a very dangerous area. When one of the characters suggests this is what they must do, another character (the one in the image) replies, “One does not simply walk into Mordor. Its black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is evil there that does not sleep. The great eye is ever watchful. It is a barren wasteland, riddled with fire, ash, and dust. The very air you breathe is a poisonous fume. Not with ten thousand men could you do this. It is folly“. (view video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrVGiuch1ag)

For many to simply stop smoking is just such a folly. It’s so difficult to simply stop. One stressful day (and aren’t most days?) and you’re back to smoking.  Of course for non smokers it’s hard to imagine this. I used to say the same thing to my smoking friends. They would just roll their eyes at me as if I didn’t get it. I didn’t. Since I never started but did try cigarettes off and on I thought it was easy. If it was so hard how come I didn’t start? I’m not sure why I didn’t, but it doesn’t really matter. The truth is that people who do not smoke will never understand. That’s why when you switch to electronic cigarettes it’s so frustrating talking to certain non smokers.

I’ve always been amazed while working here at blu how often people can get very upset at delays in shipping or back orders. After all, I’m a big gadget guy and I have to wait months for something to be released; then it usually sells out in a days time…which means if I didn’t get it right then and there I have to wait again! Just look at Apple; one of the largest manufactures of tech in the world, and they still sell out! It’s just something we’ve gotten used to when it comes to electronics. However with smoking it’s different and the reason is simple; smokers who find an alternative do not want to go back to cigarettes and any amount of time they have to wait is just a countdown to going back to smokes. That’s how hard it is to change your smoking habits. Even going to an alternative such as blu Cigs, cigarettes still have an extremely strong hold on you especially psychologically.

Now after dealing with smokers on a daily basis via our social media outlets I no longer hold the “just stop smoking” mantra. That’s why I love blu and what we do here. You don’t HAVE to stop 100%. Just go with a better alternative. An alternative that gives you many of the fixations you’ve gotten so used to. Then after you’ve switched to blu it’s up to you.  However why stop if you’ve found something better?
